When selecting patio blinds for your home, you’ll need to make different choices, such as the type of blind, fabric and level of protection you prefer. Although it’s tempting to base your choices on what appeals to you the most, the outside environment and weather conditions you experience should impact your decision making, as different options are suited to meet different needs. Below are some points to consider when it comes to choosing patio blinds based on your home’s natural environment and climate:

Rain: in general, patio and outdoor blinds are waterproof, but if you’re in a region that experiences extremely heavy or frequent rain, choose blind types built to withstand even hard torrents of rainfall and violent storms.

Wind: if you’re situated in an area that experiences strong or gale-force winds, make sure that your patio blinds are strong enough to handle it. In addition to choosing a water-resistant material, the structure and manner in which the blinds are secured are also important. Alternatively, if relatively calm conditions are common, then blinds with increased ventilation would work better.

Sun: if you live in a cool climate, you may welcome the sun and prefer transparent options that let in the sunlight. In areas that get extremely cold, choose secure patio blinds that can help insulate your home from the biting cold and retain the heat generated from your furnace or heater.

Alternatively, you may be in a tropical region where the sun’s rays are too harsh and harmful. Consider your particular situation when selecting your blind’s fabric as well as protection level. For example, you might need additional UV or sun-shielding protection. Again, humid weather requires more ventilation.

Humidity: Homes that are close to the sea, or are located in regions that are hot and humid will increase the risk of metal fixures prematurely rusting. In this situation, you need to select blinds constructed from a material that minimises or eliminates the risk of rusting.
